Times are changing. Are you ready for the change?
It is no longer ‘Concrete vs Screw Piles‘, It is ‘Concrete and Screw Piles’ working together to create innovative, cost effective foundations.
Evolution of Foundations in Construction
There is a shift in the construction industry where both concrete and helical screw piles are increasingly being used together in building foundations. This change signifies an integration of traditional and newer foundation methods to leverage the strengths of each. Helical screw piles, which are known for their quick installation and minimal environmental impact, seem to be reaching a broader acceptance, possibly becoming a mainstream option alongside traditional concrete foundations.
This kind of collaboration between two different foundation techniques could provide more versatile, efficient and sustainable construction methods, potentially leading to better outcomes in terms of cost, time, and environmental impact.
Current Projects Using Concrete with Helical Screw Piles Together
This week we are working on two large projects where helical screw piles and concrete are working together to become an integrated foundation. The first is a commercial project foundation for Marks Workwearhouse and the second is a residential foundation for an executive home builder. Both foundation installations experienced similar challenges by the Project Superintendents. Oddly enough we heard the exact same comments made by two Superintendents on each project. That is what sparked this post.
Leaders in Change
We realized that construction trades aren’t accustomed to the changes in specifications when helical screw piles and concrete are incorporated together in an integrated foundation. “Doing things as you have always done them” does not cut in when looking at the changes in specifications. We all know that proper preparation and planning lead to a successful execution in any project.
Our takeaways from the completion of these two projects is that it is critical that the specifications and drawings for the helical screw piles and the concrete are read and understood by the contractors performing each of those tasks and the Superintendent’s running the projects.
